The Dallas Mavericks PA announcer over the past nine seasons, they call him 'Humble' Billy Hayes, has left town. The team is now auditioning for a replacement, which brought in about 80 'voices' on this past Tuesday. Hopefuls sat behind a table with a microphone at American Airlines Center, with videos of Maverick games on the jumbotron for a backdrop to their tryouts. Mark Cuban, the Mavericks embattled owner, has said that he hopes to find someone 'who can embrace the attitude of the Mavs' fan.' Of course it seems to go without saying that a team would want an announcer that can understand a team and its fans. But he was also hoping for someone with their unique signature, likening his hopes to that of the famed "Let's Get Ready to Ruuuuuumble!" of boxing announcer Michael Buffer. The team fully expects to have a new announcer in place by the team's opening home game on October 27th against the Washington Wizards. The decision, however, has yet to be made.
